Passive Aggressive Signage

If you know anything about relations between China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, you will understand the delightfully passive aggressive tone behind the demarcation of the International/Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan Departure terminal at the Qingdao airport.

China is insistent that it owns these three islands, and while that may be technically true for Hong Kong and Macau, it’s basically not true for Taiwan. But you have to admire the party for taking a stance and sticking to it. Therefore, though the Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan flights depart from the International terminal, it must be made clear that they are in fact NOT international destinations, no matter how obnoxiously long it makes the sign.

  1. That’s great. And one of the reasons I love China. (From a distance.)
One of the things I found funny when I was travelling: the Hong Kong airport made us re-scan our bags. Apparently Beijing security wasn’t secure enough…
